Dear Livejournals,

Tonight I am posting to tell you about how I am the WINNER because I have recently been the recipient of:

1. this gorgeous ficlet by [info]bexless, which is about Kris at Adam's birthday party and is adorable and hilarious and then HEARTBREAKING (in the best way possible ♥)

and also

2. this Anoop/Adam (ADAMOOP!) secret agent AU ficlet by [info]fakeplasticsnow, in which Adam is a SPY and Anoop is a threatened GENIUS in need of Adam's protection and the world is clearly a FAR MORE AWESOME PLACE.

In conclusion,

\o/\o/\o/

Holy CRAP, you guys! I love the new archive!

I am going to be honest: I do support the OTW in a very vague "that's nice" kind of way. Tons of people I know are very involved in it. But when I see posts about fannish academic journals and committees and meetings and whatever scroll past my flist, my eyes glaze over and it fades into "blah bleep bloop deep dop" and I um, ignore it. I think they need fewer LOLcats and more nudity in their announcements. You hear that, guys? Throw a little shirtless somethin-somethin up there for a girl!

BUT. The archive, I care about. And LOVE. It is freaking EASY and well-designed and I hate, hate having to maintain my site (even though I love it!) and now I can have a place for my FIC TO LIVE. Without having to code the pages or worry about getting TOSed!

I am thrilled to frigging pieces.

Okay, so I'm guessing that episode of CSI would make more sense if I watched the Miami and New York versions?

Subject:Jude Law's HAMLET
Time:10:20 pm
Current Mood:Shakespearean
Saw Jude Law's Hamlet on Broadway yesterday, and after the hideous fiasco of Philip Seymour Hoffman's Iago in Othello, it was like drinking a shot of perfectly-made espresso after a terrible meal.

This production is performed with energetic pace, good, clear acting choices, and an obvious commitment to making the audience understand. It doesn't talk down to the audience, far from it; it's smart, well thought-out and directed to incorporate action and humor as well as introspection. I don't think it's a radical or ground-breaking production, but it is a good one, and Jude Law proves to be an excellent stage actor (I knew nothing about what he'd done previously on the stage) as well as a really brilliant swordsman. Who knew? It was thrilling watching the action sequences.

Horatio is a character I've written papers about (not to mention slashed with Hamlet) and in this production the actor (who is Law's understudy) is just as dashing and devoted -- heartbreakingly so -- as I want Horatio to be. Plus, he was costumed in leather, so... But I digress. The costuming was modern-dress, but not self-consciously so, and the set of Elsinore looked almost like the inside of a maximum-security prison ("Denmark's a prison," Hamlet says at one point, and the designer seems to have taken him at his word.) There's a cool snow effect. All neat stuff.

The standout in the cast was Ron Cook as Polonious and the Gravedigger. He's a terrific character actor, subtle with the comedy but very effective. Unfortunately, the women were the weakest, with Geraldine James (remember Jewel in the Crown?) as a rather pallid Gertrude and a young actress with the wonderful name of Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ophelia. Sadly, it seemed she'd been cast for her singing voice, not her acting, and she managed to make the mad scene dull as dishwater. The actor who played the ghost and the First Player was awful, depending on a plummy voice instead of any real acting. But these were only mild disappointments. The production as a whole was exciting and affecting.

I mention the Philip Seymour Hoffman Othello; I saw that about five weeks ago and it's still leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Never have I seen an Iago played with less passion, charm or charisma. Hoffman spent the entire show looking at the floor and mumbling, hands in his pockets. And he actor playing Othello was not, in fact, anything like a Moor - he was a light-skinned Hispanic, surrounded by actors of African descent in other roles, so his "blackness" - cited over and over as a reason for Othello and others to hate him - made no sense. But still it would have been good, if the man (whose name I have thankfully forgotten) had a shred of talent as an actor. Suffice to say, he did not, and between him and charmless Hoffman, it made that show 4 1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking fond thoughts right now about Jude Law, and how much I want to see him as Watson in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie. I can't wait!

I made a poll earlier, which (I hope) I posted only to Dreamwidth because it seemed at the time like crossposting and editing to point people to the poll and etc. etc. was a heroic task completely beyond me--

Anyway! I posted a poll, asking what I should watch while lying in my sickbed, and the poll was extremely helpful because I watched results come in and said, "Why is everyone telling me to watch LEVERAGE? I WANT THEM TO VOTE FOR CASTLE."

So then I downloaded some Castle and piled a lot more blankets on my bed because I couldn't stop shivering and apparently my temperature was 99.8, and then I watched the first episode and ♥ ♥ ♥. Hopefully not just because of the fever.

And now I will eat some dinner and wait very very patiently for the internet fairies to bring me some more.

WORK FASTER, INTERNET FAIRIES.

I mean, I'm sure Leverage is awesome and I'm totally going to watch it at some point! But Castle!

No homogeneous bland day for me, no!

Bad - no central heating this morning

Good - Spawn #2's report card came in the post and it's the best report card I've ever seen in my life. They're graded 1 - 6, 1 being extra-awesome and 6 being 'that child shall hang!' It was pretty much a sheet of paper covered in ones. I think she got an upper 2 in one class because her homework was late once, but apart from that - she's scoring as awesome in everything. I bought her new jeans and inappropriate shoes as a reward.

Bad - I have put back on every single pound I lost over the summer. And I've lost what little muscle tone I had. Fat and flabby - not cute.

Good - I have two episodes of my favourite shows waiting to be watched on the media tank, and a movie I've been wanting to see forever was on sale in Asda :)

Bad - the scanners at work hate me. I can't use the little one because it runs off the terminal server, and the terminal server can never find my profile. My profile is apparently some kind of mystical being which can only be found if you're not looking for it. If I want to use the little scanner, I have to use someone else's log in details, and I'm not supposed to know anyone else's password. *ahem* So I have to use the big scanner. All I needed to do was scan in a glossy 5 x 7 photograph. Would it let me? HELL NO. Not only did it refuse to scan, it then scanned but cropped the image oddly, then scanned but did a whole 'you don't really want the sky to be blue, right?' thing, and the whole time it kept giving me an electric shock when I pressed the area on the touchscreen to set the file type. Me - I don't want a .tiff, I want a .pdf. Scanner - sure, here's the menu. Me - thanks. Scanner - *bzzzt* Me - MOTHERFUCKER!!! I ended up wearing a green rubber thimblette as protection, but it was too late: the tip of my right middle finger hurts in a cell damage kind of way.

Good - I had Sag Aloo for dinner. How does the not-so-local Indian restaurant make something as simple as spinach and potatoes taste so good? Sorcery! It has to be. I'm just at the perfectly full stage, when all is right with the world, and a nice long belch is almost as good as an orgasm.

So here's an embarrassing admission, internets:

After I had Ava, I wasn't working. I was home until she was nearly nine months old, while Mr. E worked his day job, and his night job, and most of my friends live in the city/Boston/places far away from my house. So. I'd be up from whatever - 6am - and with an infant all day long, and got myself to that slightly crazy stay at home mommy phase where you think NO ONE in the world can watch your kid except for you and you don't leave the house, blah blah.

ANYWAY. This is not the point.

The POINT is, that while this was happening, I watched a lot of tv. A LOT of tv. A lot of VERY BAD tv. And we're not talking Smallville bad. We're talking Everybody Loves Raymond/The King of Queens/TBS reruns kind of bad.

And in the midst of these REALLY BAD RERUNS I watched for like, nine months, I became ADDICTED to my hour a day of Yes, Dear which is a really, really, REALLY cheesy sitcom starring Kurt's dad.

I don't really know what the point of this post is, except to tell you I KINDA LOVE KURT'S DAD. And Kurt. And Glee last night. Like, a LOT.

In other news, you know what else I love, internets? MELROSE PLACE. No, I'm not even kidding. Over the weekend I told [info]serialkarma that I kind of went into MP planning on loving it no matter what it was like, good or bad. And the cheese factor is there, of course. It IS Melrose Place. But my god, I didnt expect to actually *like* it. Like, it's up there as one of my favorite shows in a very long time.

WHATEVER. SHUT UP ALL OF YOU.

Finally, last night before the tv marathon started I wrote 1400 words of non-au J2 cliche fic. For no reason except for that it's AWESOME. I also snagged my second first choice prompt (does that make sense?) for [info]j2_everafter, which means I'm writing Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, AND Invincible by January. I kind of call that a WIN.

Subject:Interview poll!
Time:06:46 am
I have a billion things to say, but here is a quickie post in number form:

1. My friend lost her job yesterday. She works in my field, in a neighboring state. She just graduated with her Master's degree and was making twenty-five thousand dollars a year. That's it. That's...not far off from what I make. But I don't have grad school debt.

2. Aaaand we just fund out that two more facilities in my field are going to be closed by the state. It's carnage, people.

3. All of which is to say, please think good interview vibes for me this afternoon? Because I REALLY REALLY want this job.

Interview poll! )

For the record, I am wearing a suit, my normal, everyday makeup, (mineral foundation, mascara, eyeliner, plus I might throw on some tinted lip balm) neat, filed, and buffed nails, (though I would and have gotten manicures for interviews when I can afford it) and WAY higher-heeled boots than I normally wear, because I didn't have time to get the suit altered and the pants are way too long on me. *g* Though I do normally wear low heels to interviews, which is not something I wear to work everyday.

Dear Yuletide Author...

Who knew I wouldn't choose a single anime fandom for my list?! Astounding. Surprising. This year I chose a movie, a Shakespeare play and two book fandoms. The fact you're writing a story for me in one of these fandoms is an amazingly wonderful thing. I'm very grateful and I hope you'll enjoy working on the story. details follow, plus general musings, the naming of fandoms, and a pause to howl at the moon )

YOU GUYS

Much longer clips of five songs from Adam's album (on MJ's even though [info]ontd_ai ninjad the fuck out of this because MJ's is not locked and has tidy little flash player things and...whatever, JUST GO).

I'm not coherent enough to say anything about them except that I love (most of) them and I love Adam and ADAM.

Also, I wrote a little comment fic thing last night, for the prompt "Kradam first kiss". It is here )

Ow.

I have pain all over. Stupid hormones. My body mostly behaves itself - I'm not one of those women who have to lie down in a dark room with a hot water bottle and three strips of iburofen for two days a month - but today my body decided to have a pain party. It's like it knew I was doing vitally important training and decided to fuck with me. Cramps of doom and migraine. WTF?

Time for the dark room and painkillers. Bye - see you when I'm well/stoned.

In Flanders Fields
by Lt Col John McCrae, MD (1872-1918), Canadian Army

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

And personally, I'd prefer to interpret "take up our quarrel" as "sue for peace and bring an end to this hell for the benefit of everyone", but that's me. I've grown far less inclined to support military action since watching all of my active duty neighbors deploy. Many thanks, vets.
